Central ends season with aggressive effort

PELLA—The Central College women’s soccer squad came out firing against William Penn University on Tuesday but fell to the visitors 3-1 in the final match of the season.

The Dutch were the aggressors keeping the ball on the William Penn half of the field for much of the game and holding a 20-19 shot advantage. It was the third time this season Central outshot its opponent, and the third time it reached 20 shots. Midfielders Jenna Hindman (junior, Swisher, Cedar Rapids Prairie) and Kristi Klatt (sophomore, Cedar Falls) led the shooting barrage with seven and six shots respectively.

“We wanted to come out, have fun and work hard,” said head Central coach Colin Kuchy. “And as always we wanted to come away with the win. We weren’t able to do all of those things but it was a joy to see them compete for the whole game.”

William Penn scored first, finding the net in the 40th-minute and taking a 1-0 lead into the half. Central continued to push, leaving themselves vulnerable on defense at times and allowing the Statesmen to increase their lead on an Ashley Hasler goal with under 10 minutes remaining in the game.

But the Dutch didn’t relent and put themselves on the board 14 seconds later when midfielder Cole Krause (sophomore, Slater, Ballard HS) capitalized on a pass from midfielder Hindman for her first goal of the season. William Penn added another goal in the 86th-minute.

Kuchy said that this game showed the progress the team made throughout the season.

“We’ve grown all year and we’ve been working hard to compete longer and work hard in every game,” said Kuchy. “You could see that today.”

Goalkeeper Abby Norman (freshman, Genseo, Ill.) recorded seven saves in the effort.

The Dutch finish the season with a 3-15 record (2-6 Iowa Conference).
