Oct. 25, 2008Central knocks off Wartburg on the road
WAVERLY—Scoring its second straight win over a regionally ranked opponent, the Central College men’s soccer team got a pair of Brett McKenzie (sophomore, Lindenhurst, Ill., Antioch HS) goals to knock off Wartburg College 2-1. The Dutch, 12-5 overall, recorded their sixth consecutive victory and completed the Iowa Conference season with a 7-1 mark.
Central had upset No. 11Loras College 3-2 in overtime at Pella Wednesday. The Duhawks are ranked second in the NCAA Division III West Region. Wartburg (11-6 overall, 4-3 conference) is rated fifth in the region.
But the Dutch had to play a man short for the final 35 minutes Saturday after losing a player to a red card, a game misconduct penalty. The card comes with an automatic one-point deduction in the conference standings, leaving the Dutch in second place heading into Saturday night’s action. The other eight conference schools have a game remaining next week.
Goalkeeper Greg Foote (senior, Maple Grove, Minn.) recorded 12 saves as the Dutch defense withstood a Wartburg onslaught in the final half. The Knights outshot Central 14-2 in the half and 25-12 overall.
McKenzie put Central up with a goal in the 20th minute, was assisted by midfielder Cody Jandik (sophomore, Cedar Rapids, Cedar Valley Christian HS). Wartburg’s Victor Mudzinganyama tied the game with 16 minutes left in the first half. But McKenzie got the winner on an unassisted goal with 37 minutes remaining in the game. It was his team-high ninth goal of the year.
“I’ve got a lot of admiration for our players,” coach Garry Laidlaw said. “To do what they did in the second half, words can’t describe how proud I am of them.”
Central closes the regular season with a non-conference game against Hamline (Minn.) Friday at Pella. Game time is 3 p.m. at the Kuyper Athletics Complex field.
The Dutch then begin preparations for the six-team Iowa Conference tournament, where they’re assured of receiving a first-round bye and will open play in the semifinals at Waverly Nov. 7.
