Oct. 25, 2008Net play carries Central past Augustana, Millikin
PELLA—Central College made it a perfect weekend behind some outstanding play at the net, defeating Augustana College (Ill.) 3-0 and Millikin University (Ill.) 3-1 Saturday at the Central Invitational volleyball tourney.
“This was a great, great weekend for us,” said head Central coach Kent Clayberg, whose club was 4-0 over two days. “The things that we’ve been working on are coming together and we’ve come together collectively as a team.”
It took the Dutch only 65 minutes to defeat Augustana (20-10) 25-19- 25-18, 25-13 in their morning match. Outside hitter Michelle Ripperger (junior, Urbandale) had 11 kills and setter Maggie Snyder (freshman, Alexandria, Minn., Jefferson HS) recorded 14 assists. As a team Central recorded 13 blocks against the Vikings.
Central faced more adversity in its 23-25, 25-21, 25-22, 27-25 afternoon victory against Millikin (21-11). After losing the first set, defense ignited the Dutch.
The Dutch recorded 11 blocks against Millikin and middle hitter Haley Brillhart (freshman, Pella) had her hand in seven.
“Our blocking was the absolute key to our weekend,” said Clayberg. “It helped out our defense tremendously and let our offense play bold and aggressive.”
Outside hitter Lindsay Jennings (junior, Atkins, Benton HS) recorded 12 kills in the match and outside hitter Miranda Kouba (senior, Dubuque, Wahlert HS) had 10. Snyder and setter Megan Callahan (senior, Dubuque, Wahlert HS) each had 23 assists.
“We had two good wins against two good teams today,” Clayberg said. “It’s not just that we won, it’s how we won. I think we’ve shown we’re a very capable team and there’s no reason to think we can’t do some great things, but it’s about convincing ourselves we can play this well against anyone.”
Central improves to 18-13 (4-1 conference) heading into its final three matches before the Iowa Conference tournament. On Tuesday the Dutch host league co-leader Loras College (26-4 overall, 6-0 conference). Last season Central defeated Loras 3-1 in Dubuque.
