Dutch seventh in elite Georgia field

CHESTNUT MOUNTAIN, GA.—Andrew Townsend (junior, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) posted a 1-under-par 72-71—143 and the Central College men’s golf team placed seventh in an elite field at the Oglethorpe/Royal Lakes Fall Classic Tuesday.

Townsend was sixth in the individual standings of the 36-hole tourney, which included nine nationally ranked squads.

No. 4-rated host Oglethorpe (Ga.) rallied to win the tourney at 290-287—577, a shot better than No. 6 Guilford (N.C.). No. 11 Rhodes (Tenn.) followed with 584, No. 1 Huntingdon (Ala.) shot 580, No. 19 Greensboro (N.C.) had 602, No. 12 Emory (Ga.) shot 592 and No. 21 Central shot 301-306—607. Following the Dutch was DePauw (Ind.) at 608 with No. 16 La Grange (Ga.) at 613, Piedmont (Ala.) at 621 and No. 23 Wesley (Del.) at 623.

Central’s Andy Petersen (senior, Davenport, West HS) shot 71-78—149 with Brent Goodenow (freshman, Johnston) at 75-83—158, Justin Smool (junior, Bagley, Panorama HS) at 86-75—161 and Joel Winters (junior, Hampton, Hampton-Dumont HS) at 83-82—165. At-large entrant Jason Harvey (sophomore, Goldfield, Clarion-Goldfield HS) shot 78-83—161.

Coach Charlie Estabrook was impressed with Townsend’s finish to a strong fall campaign.

“Andrew had a very good score,” he said. “Really, it was an All-American performance against a very good field. He hit 15 greens. He didn’t make a lot of birdies but he didn’t make many mistakes, either. He just played very consistent golf.”

Finishing ahead of a pair of nationally ranked schools should raise Central’s stock, Estabrook said.

“I honestly was hoping for fourth or fifth place,” he said. “We would have had to have all of us playing well. But with us not firing on all cylinders, seventh isn’t bad.”

The tournament concludes Central’s fall season. The Dutch open the spring schedule with a trip to Arizona in mid-March.
