Petersen 1-under in Georgia tourney

CHESTNUT MOUNTAIN, GA.—Competing in a field with nine nationally ranked schools, Central College senior Andy Petersen (Davenport, West HS) fired a 1-under-par 71 and stands in seventh place after one round of the 36-hole Oglethorpe/Royal Lakes Fall Classic. No. 21-rated Central is tied for seventh with Emory (Ga.) in the 12-team tourney at 301. No. 6 Guilford (N.C.) leads with 286, followed by No. 4-rated host Oglethorpe (Ga.) at 290, No. 11 Rhodes (Tenn.) at 293; No. 19 Greensboro (N.C.) at 295, No. 1 Huntingdon (Ala.) at 296 and DePauw (Ind.) at 299. The Dutch lead No. 16 LaGrange (Ga.), No. 23 Wesley (Del.) and Piedmont (Ala.). Andrew Townsend (junior, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) is ninth at 72 followed by Brent Goodenow (freshman, Johnston) at 75, Joel Winters (junior, Hampton, Hampton-Dumont HS) at 83 and Justin Smool (junior, Bagley, Panorama HS) at 86. Central’s Jason Harvey (sophomore, Goldfield, Clarion-Goldfield HS) shot 78.

“We played well for most of the day,” coach Charlie Estabrook said. “Andrew Townsend and Brent Goodenow played well coming in and held on to great scores.  To be successful, we need to be more consistent from No. 1 through No. 5. Andy Petersen, Andrew and Brent had great scores. We aren't that far out of the top five. I think we can get there tomorrow. We worked hard on our swings after the round and hope to see some serious results in tomorrow’s round.”
