Oct. 18, 2008Simpson pulls away from Central in second half
PELLA—The Central College women’s soccer squad went into the half trailing by one before Iowa Conference foe Simpson College exploded for five goals in the second half to give the visitors a 6-0 win Saturday. It took a goal by Nicole Dillenburg with 38 seconds left in the first half to give Simpson (8-5-1, 2-3-0 conference) a 1-0 lead, even though they outshot the Dutch 11-3 to that point. “A goal right before the half is always a momentum builder for one team and a bit of a downfall for the other,” said Central head Colin Kuchy.
Simpson continued to control the game offensively, outshooting Central by a final tally of 28-5 and holding a 14-2 shots on goal advantage.
“I think we came out well to start the second half,” said Kuchy. “But then we just fell asleep mentally. We can work harder and play better and we’ve shown that.”
Goalkeeper Abby Norman (freshman, Geneseo, Ill.) had eight saves for the Dutch.
Central (3-12, 2-3 conference) will host Loras College (11-4, 4-1 conference) in a men’s/women’s doubleheader on Wednesday, with the women’s game at 3 p.m. The Duhawks are in second in the Iowa Conference and beat Coe 6-0 Saturday. Last season Loras defeated Central 3-2 in Dubuque.
