Oct. 11, 2008Two second half goals by Central drop Dubuque
DUBUQUE—The Central College men’s soccer squad scored two goals in the first five minutes of the second half and held on for a 2-0 Iowa Conference win at the University of Dubuque Saturday. Despite outshooting Dubuque 9-3 in the first half the game went into the break scoreless.
It only took 47 seconds after the intermission for forward Brett McKenzie (sophomore, Lindenhurst, Ill., Antioch HS) scored to give the Dutch a 1-0 lead. Four minutes later forward Eric Shelton (freshman, Appleton, Wis., Kimberly HS) doubled the lead on an assist from midfielder Cody Jandik (sophomore, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Cedar Valley Christian). McKenzie and Shelton share the team scoring lead with six goals each.
Goalkeeper Greg Foote (senior, Maple Grove, Minn.) had five saves for the Dutch and recorded his third shutout of the season as Dubuque fell to 6-6 overall and 1-2 in the league.
Wednesday Central (8-5 overall, 3-1 conference) is at Cedar Rapids for a men’s/women’s league doubleheader against Coe College, starting at 2 p.m. Central leads the all-time series with the Kohawks 8-4, prevailing in the last six meetings including a 6-1 win at Pella last fall. But Coe entered the weekend in second place in the conference and is now 7-3-1 overall and 2-1 in conference after falling 2-0 to Wartburg Saturday
