Shelton hat trick fuels Central rout

PELLA—Central College freshman Eric Shelton (Appleton, Wis., Kimberly HS) had three goals and an assist in a 9-0 men's soccer win over Iowa Conference opponent Buena Vista University Wednesday.

Shelton’s first goal came 57 seconds into the game off a Kenny Kranz (freshman, Champaign, Ill., Centennial HS) assist, and he added an unassisted goal during the 19th minute. His final goal of the day came two minutes after halftime on an assist from midfielder Nick DeLucia (sophomore, Urbana, Ill., Urbana).

Defender Dan Hurd (sophomore, West Des Moines, Valley HS) scored two second- half goals for Central. Kranz, forward Brett McKenzie (sophomore, Lindenhurst, Ill., Antioch HS), forward Derek Farnworth (sophomore, Mooresville, Ind., Mooresville HS), and midfielder Cody Jandik (sophomore, Cedar Rapids, Cedar Valley Christian HS) also had goals for the Dutch.

Central led Buena Vista in shots on goal 21-1, and goalkeeper Quincy Garner (sophomore, Pella, Pella HS) had the only save, after replacing starter Greg Foote (senior, Maple Grove, Minn.) in the second half.

Next up for Central (7-5 overall, 2-1 conference) will be a trip to the University of Dubuque (6-4 overall, 1-0 conference) Saturday for a league women’s/men’s doubleheader. The women’s game kicks off at 1 p.m. with the men’s game at 3 p.m. Dubuque is 6-5 overall and 1-1 in the conference after being shut out at Coe College Wednesday 1-0. Central defeated the Spartans last year 1-0 before drawing with them 1-1 in the Iowa Conference tournament. The Dutch advanced in a shootout. That’s the only blemish in the all-time series which Central leads 7-0-1.
