Goalkeeper Abby Norman

Norman posts first collegiate shutout

PELLA—Goalkeeper Abby Norman (freshman, Geneseo, Ill.) recorded nine saves as the Central College women’s soccer squad blanked Buena Vista University 5-0 Wednesday for its first Iowa Conference win.

Midfielder Kristi Klatt (junior, Cedar Falls) scored two goals for the Dutch (2-10 overall, 1-2 conference), who snapped a nine-game losing skid.

The Dutch led 1-0 at halftime on an unassisted Kristen Davis (junior, Saint Charles, Ill., East HS) goal and quickly built upon that lead when Klatt found the net 54 seconds into the second half.

“Kristi played very disciplined in the middle for us today,” said Central coach Colin Kuchy.

Midfielder Jenna Hindman (junior, Swisher, Cedar Rapids Prairie HS) recorded a goal and an assist, and defender Katherine Mills (sophomore, Redfield, Panorama HS) also scored.

It was Norman’s first collegiate win.

"Abby played very strong as goalkeeper today, something she’s showed us before that she’s capable of doing,” said Kuchy.

Central held a 20-15 shot advantage over Buena Vista (2-10 overall, 0-3 conference).

“Our confidence is much better,” Kuchy said. “We’ve still got tough games against tough opponents ahead. We need our actions from this performance to carry over and it will be up to the girls to bring that when we play again.”

Central heads to Dubuque for a league women’s-men’s doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. Dubuque entered Wednesday’s game at Coe College with a 4-4-3 overall record and a 0-0-1 league mark. Central and Dubuque fought to a 1-1 draw at Pella last year.
