Oct. 6, 2008Central's Paulson is league athlete of the week
PELLA—Central College freshman Sarah Paulson of Ottumwa is the Iowa Conference female athlete of the week.
Paulson was also named the Iowa Conference women’s golfer of the week for the fourth time in five weeks, while Central senior Hilary Baehr (Des Moines, Roosevelt HS) has been named the conference women’s tennis player of the week.
Paulson captured medalist honors at the Iowa Conference tourney last weekend. The 72-hole tourney was played Sept. 26-27 at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls and Oct. 3-4 at Blank Golf Course in Des Moines. She broke the conference 18-hole scoring mark with a 71 Sept. 27 and tied the school record, tied the league 36-hole record and broke her own 36-hole school mark at 76-71—147, then tied the conference 72-hole record and broke the school mark with 76-71-81-78—306, running away with the league title by 8 shots.
The school season stroke average record also fell as Paulson averaged 79.1 in her rookie season.
It’s the fifth straight week a Central golfer has been honored. Nicole Wenstrand (sophomore, Essex) was cited Sept. 15. Paulson was previously selected Sept. 8, 22 and 29.
Baehr named—Baehr was honored after posting a 3-0 singles record in a challenging week. Playing at No. 1 singles, Baehr won in straight sets over Grinnell’s Toby Cain, 7-6, 6-2; Luther’s Alana Humpal, 6-4, 6-4; and Wis.-River Falls’ Kathryne Ostrowski, 6-3, 6-0. She also teamed with Stephanie Gibbons (sophomore, Ankeny) to post a 2-1 record at No. 2 doubles.
Baehr and the Dutch open play in the six-team Iowa Conference team tourney Friday in Iowa City.
