Oct. 3, 2008Townsend leads Central golfers in first round
PLEASANT HILL—Junior Andrew Townsend (Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) fired a 3-under-par 69, a collegiate best, and is in third place after the first round of Central’s Ryerson Fall Classic Friday. Competing at the par-72 Copper Creek Golf Course in Pleasant Hill, Townsend is 2 shots behind Steven McGlynn of Indian Hills, who shot 67. Simon Lockhart, also of Indian Hills, shot 68.
The 36-hole tournament moves to Central’s home course, Pella’s Bos Landen Golf Club, for Saturday’s final round.
Townsend’s previous best round for the Dutch was a 73 in 2006.
“Andrew really turned his game around,” coach Charlie Estabrook said. “I’m pretty excited about that.”
Indian Hills leads the 12-team tournament with 287 while the Dutch shot 292 and Central’s second unit, the White squad, is third at 295. Indian Hills’ second unit is fourth at 297, with the Central Black team at 304, the Central Gray team at 310, Graceland at 323 and Grinnell at 328.
“I was happy that our second team stepped up and shot a good score,” Estabrook said. “We had good rounds from a lot of new faces.”
Dutch freshman Brent Goodenow (Johnston) strengthened his hold on a varsity spot with a 2-under-par 70.
“I’m very proud of him,” Estabrook said. “He’s staying very consistent.”
Jason Harvey (sophomore, Goldfield, Clarion-Goldfield HS) followed with 76, Justin Smool (junior, Bagley, Panorama HS) shot 77 and last weekend’s Twin Cities Classic champ, Andy Petersen (senior, Davenport, West HS), had 78.
Joel Winters (junior, Hampton, Hampton-Dumont HS) shot 72 for the Central White squad and is sixth. Matt Stock (junior, Queen City, Mo., Schuyler County HS) is seventh with 73 for the White team, Danny Pattee (freshman, Avoca, AHST HS) and Reid Petersen (senior, Ankeny) are tied for 10th at 75 and Chris Crawford (sophomore, Conrad, BCLUW) shot 78.
Matt Vegter (freshman, Morrison, Ill.) and Travis Havens (freshman, Belmond, Belmond-Klemme HS) each shot 75 for the Central Black squad and are tied for 10th while Will Overlander (freshman, Argyle, Texas) shot 74 for the Central Gray squad and is tied for eighth.
