Central rallies past Luther for road win

DECORAH—The Central College volleyball team staged a late rally to overcome Luther College Wednesday, 20-25, 25-22, 23-25, 25-22, 15-12.

Outside hitter Michelle Ripperger (junior, Urbandale) had 13 kills and 10 digs in the 2-hour, 15-minute struggle. Central (8-9 overall, 2-1 Iowa Conference) play, also got 37 assists and 20 digs from setter Megan Callahan (senior, Dubuque, Wahlert HS).  Outside hitter Miranda Kouba (senior, Dubuque, Wahlert HS) had nine kills and 17 digs. Middle hitter Lindsay Jennings (junior, Atkins, Benton HS) had nine kills and six blocks while middle hitter Sara Mouw (junior, Greene, North Butler HS) and right-side hitter Ashley Ellingson (sophomore, West Des Moines, Valley HS) had eight kills and five blocks.

The Dutch jumped to a 6-1 lead in the fifth set but Luther climbed within13-12 before Central was able to settle the issue.

Central extended its winning streak against Luther to 24 matches, last falling Nov. 2, 1991. Luther (13-7 overall, 1-3 conference) had 14 kills and 32 digs from Tiffany Kruse.

The Dutch have a weekend off before returning to league action Tuesday, playing host to the University of Dubuque in a 7:30 p.m. match at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium. The Spartans are 10-12 overall and 1-2 in league play.
