Grinnell topples Dutch, 8-1

GRINNELL—Grinnell College swept three tight doubles matches and posted an 8-1 decision over the Central College women’s tennis team Wednesday.

Central’s lone victory came at No. 1 singles where Hilary Baehr (senior, Des Moines, Roosevelt HS) was a 7-6, 6-2 winner over Toby Cain. But the Dutch (7-6) dropped the three doubles matches by 8-6, 8-6, 8-4 scores and also suffered a three-set loss in singles as Grinnell improved to 12-2.

“It was kind of a funny match,” coach Bryan Mours said. “A couple balls here and there and it could have been 7-2 our way.

“But the players really fought hard. They’ve got really positive attitudes and are excited about the opportunity we have this weekend.”

That opportunity is taking on perennial Iowa Conference power Luther College at Decorah Saturday morning. The Norse blanked Central twice last year, 9-0 at Pella in the regular season and 5-0 in the conference tournament semifinals. The Norse are 10-3 this fall, with a 4-1 record against conference opponents.

Central meets Luther at 9 a.m., then faces Wis.-River Falls at noon. The Falcons started the week with a 7-2 record. Saturday’s matches conclude Central’s regular-season dual meet schedule. The Dutch then prepare for the Iowa Conference team tournament at Iowa City Oct. 10-11. The top six teams in dual competition qualify for the tourney. Central stands third with a 5-2 mark against conference foes.
