Sept. 27, 2008Record-setting day for Paulson at Iowa Conference meet
CEDAR FALLS—It’s turning into a rookie season to remember for Central College freshman Sarah Paulson (Ottumwa). Paulson smashed the Iowa Conference 18-hole scoring record with a steamy 71 on the par-72 Pheasant Ridge Golf Course and grabbed a 9-stroke lead at the midway point of the 72-hole league tourney. The tournament concludes with 36 holes at Blank Golf Course in Des Moines next Friday and Saturday, starting at 10 a.m.
The young Dutch remain in second place in the team standings, trailing nationally ranked Wartburg College. The Knights lead with 315-319—334 with Central at 325-323—648 and Luther in third at 333-331—664. Central was sixth in the league a year ago.
Paulson, in third place entering the day, shot 76-71—147 and broke the conference 18-hole record of 72 set by Wartburg’s Daina Deery and Andrea Schiltz (twice). Paulson also tied the league’s 36-hole scoring mark of 147 set by Schiltz in 2006, also at Pheasant Ridge. Deery and Wartburg teammate Steph Burns were the first-round co-leaders with 75 and Burns, the defending individual champ, is now alone in second place at 75-81—156.
Central’s Eva Downes (junior, Woodstock, Ill., Marion Catholic Central HS) is in fourth place at 79-79—158. Abby Lukensmeyer (freshman, Hampton, Hampton-Dumont HS) is 10th at 86-80—166, Nicole Wenstrand (sophomore, Essex) is 23rd 84-96—180 and Allison Crooks (sophomore, Moline, Ill.) is 24th at 90-93—183. There are 44 players in the field.
