CEDAR FALLS—Two Central College players cracked the top five and pushed the young Dutch to second place after the first round of the Iowa Conference women’s golf tournament Friday.
Freshman Sarah Paulson (Ottumwa) shot a 4-over-par 76 at the Pheasant Ridge Golf Course and is in third place, just a shot out of the lead, while Eva Downes (junior, Woodstock, Ill., Marion Catholic Central HS) fired a 79 and is in fourth.
Central shot 325 and is 10 shots behind nationally ranked Wartburg, the tourney favorite. Luther is third at 333 with Simpson fourth at 336.
Nicole Wenstrand (sophomore, Essex) shot 84 and is 12th while Abby Lukensmeyer (freshman, Hampton, Hampton-Dumont HS) shot 86 and Allison Crooks (sophomore, Moline, Ill.) shot 90.
The 72-hole tourney continues with another round at Pheasant Ridge Saturday before concluding with 36 holes at Blank Golf Course in Des Moines next weekend.
