Solid first day for Dutch at tourney

PELLA—Central College threw a scare into sixth-ranked  Carthage College (Wis.) but came away with a split of opening-day matches at the Central Classic Friday. After outlasting St. Olaf College (Minn.) 25-20, 25-16, 11-25, 23-25, 15-9, the Dutch battled Carthage before falling 25-23, 20-25, 25-16, 25-18.

Right-side hitter Ashley Ellingson (sophomore, West Des Moines, Valley HS) had 16 kills and nine digs in the win over St. Olaf. Outside hitter Michelle Ripperger (junior, Urbandale) had 13 kills and hit a match-high .417. Outside hitter Miranda Kouba (senior, Dubuque, Wahlert HS) Ashley Ellingson attackhad 11 kills, three blocks and 10 digs while middle hitter Sara Mouw (junior, Greene, North Butler HS) added eight kills and three blocks. Setter Megan Callahan (senior, Dubuque, Wahlert HS) had 47 assists.

Ripperger had eight kills against Carthage while middle hitter Lindsay Jennings (junior, Atkins, Benton HS), Mouw and Kouba each had seven, but the Dutch hit just .088. Callahan had 30 assists.

“Going five (sets) against St. Olaf hurt us against Carthage,” coach Kent Clayberg said. “You could just see that we weren’t getting the same pop at the end.

“But this team is coming along and developing nicely. I thought we looked really good at times passing the ball and moving around, but the battle we continue to find is mental engagement.”

Saturday Central meets No. 17 Hope College (Mich.) at 10 a.m. at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium and Wis.-River Falls at 2 p.m.
