Sept. 24, 2008Women take down conference foe Buena Vista
FORT DODGE—Despite playing shorthanded the Central College women’s tennis team scored a 7-2 victory over Buena Vista University Wednesday.
The Central men’s squad completed the sweep, ending its brief fall schedule with an 8-1 victory over the Beavers.
The Central women (7-5-1) were again without two regulars. Hilary Baehr (senior, Des Moines, Roosevelt HS) and Katie Williamson (sophomore, Pella) had to miss the trip because of class conflicts.
But the Dutch got singles victories at Nos. 1 and 2 from Faith Bliss (junior, Ottumwa) and Steph Gibbons (sophomore, Ankeny) while Emily Swartz (freshman, Eldora, South Hardin HS) prevailed at No. 4, Laura Bade (senior, Boone) won at No. 5 and Carissa Bane (sophomore, Des Moines, Southeast Polk HS) won at No. 6.
Bliss and Donner teamed to win at No. 1 doubles while Gibbons and Bethany Druvenga (freshman, Spencer) won at No. 3.
Buena Vista fell to 1-7 and is 0-5 against Iowa Conference opponents. Central is 4-2 against league foes. Central gets a weekend off before traveling to Grinnell College next Wednesday for a 4 p.m. match. Grinnell is 8-2 heading into three matches this weekend. Central edged the Pioneers at Grinnell last year, 5-4.
