Sept. 24, 2008Central beat by Mount Mercy on strength of four unanswered goals
PELLA—Four unanswered goals by Mount Mercy against the Central College women’s soccer team led the visitors to a 4-2 victory Wednesday.
The Dutch started the scoring in the 20th minute when midfielder Kristi Klatt (sophomore, Cedar Falls) passed across the field to forward Lacey Merfeld (freshman, Peosta, Dubuque-Hempstead) who put it away for her third goal of the season, giving the Dutch their first lead in six games.
Central increased its lead to two in the 43rd minute on a Jenna Hindman (junior, Swisher, Cedar Rapids Prairie) goal, assisted by defender Alex Kleis (freshman, Pella).
Mount Mercy came right back to tie the game before halftime, scoring two goals in a 45-second flurry, the last coming 6 seconds before the intermission.
“We just fell asleep,” said head coach Colin Kuchy.
The second half was all Mount Mercy, as the Dutch were outshot 15-4 in the final 45 minutes, surrendering two more goals.
“We play well at times,” said Kuchy. “And we’re creating some chances. Right now it’s individual determination, not team determination.”
The Dutch were without one of their top defenders, Jessi Steward (junior, Cedar Falls), who is sidelined with an injury.
“When she’s not in we lose a solid player and a team leader,” Kuchy said.
Central (1-7 overall, 0-1 Iowa Conference) returns to action Saturday at 2 p.m., hosting St. Mary’s (Neb.) (3-3-1).
