Sept. 22, 2008Central, St. Ambrose settle for draw
DAVENPORT—The Central College women’s tennis team was in position to score a dual win at St. Ambrose but ran out of sunlight.
Carissa Bane (sophomore, Des Moines, Southeast Polk HS) led Maurita Flo 6-3, 4-4 but didn’t get credited with a win and the teams settled for a 4-4 draw.
The Dutch were without No. 1 singles player Hilary Baehr (senior, Des Moines, Roosevelt HS) who stayed behind because of class obligations, but still made a capable showing. Faith Bliss (junior, Ottumwa) moved up to No. 1 singles and scored a win and Steph Gibbons (sophomore, Ankeny) was also a winner at No. 3 singles. Gibbons and Katie Williamson (sophomore, Pella) won at No. 2 doubles while Brigitte Newman (sophomore, Albia) and Caitlin Dau (sophomore, Eldridge, North Scott HS) teamed for the first time and won at No. 3 doubles.
“We had to overcome not having Hilary Baehr and really showed our depth,” coach Bryan Mours said. “Carissa Bane, in my eyes, got her first varsity singles win tonight. I thought everybody played well.
Central (6-5-1) travels to Fort Dodge Wednesday to take on Buena Vista in a 4 p.m. match.
Men race past St. Ambrose—Central’s men’s tennis squad continued its brief fall schedule with a 6-3 victory over St. Ambrose. Mours noted that Central fell to St. Ambrose 6-3 last January.
“It was great to avenge the loss we had at the beginning of last season,” Mours said. “The guys have had a great attitude this fall and got a good win.”
