Slow start for Dutch in Wisconsin

EAU CLAIRE, WIS.—Jason Harvey (sophomore, Goldfield, Clarion-Goldfield HS) shot a 76 as the Central College men’s golf team opened play in the Frank Wigglesworth Blugold Collegiate Invitational at the Eau Claire Country Club.

Final first-round results of the 36-hole tournament were not available because four teams were still on the course as daylight faded, but the Dutch were tied for fifth among the 11 teams in the clubhouse. Wis.-Stout leads at 298 while Central shot 313.

Andy Petersen (junior, Davenport, West HS) shot 77, Justin Smool (junior, Bagley, Panorama HS) had 78, Andrew Townsend (junior, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) had 82 and Joel Winters (junior, Hampton, Hampton-Dumont HS) had 85.

“We missed some greens on the short side and we didn’t get up and down,” coach Charlie Estabrook said. “And we didn’t hit the ball well at all today. Sometimes it’s not how well you do on your good holes but how bad you play on your bad holes. We need to do a better job of avoiding big numbers.”

The tourney resumes at 8 a.m. Monday.
