Sept. 20, 2008Central off to solid start at Illinois Wesleyan Fall Classic
NORMAL, ILL.—Freshman Sarah Paulson (Ottumwa) fired a 79 as the Central College women’s golf team got off to a strong start at the Illinois Wesleyan Fall Classic.
Competing on the par-72 Ironwood Golf Club, Central posted a 343 and stands 11th in the 23-team tournament. Wis.-Stevens Point shot an impressive 308 while Otterbein (Ohio) shot 310. Loras, the only other Iowa Conference school in the tournament, is 22nd at 380.
The 36-hole tourney was delayed 90 minutes due to heavy rains.
Paulson is tied for 13th in the individual standings. Eva Downes (junior, Woodstock, Ill., Marion Catholic Central HS) shot 86 while Nicole Wenstrand (sophomore, Essex) and Allison Crooks (sophomore, Moline, Ill.) each had 89 and Abby Lukensmeyer (freshman, Hampton, Hampton-Dumont HS) had 93.
“They fought hard,” coach Jodee Schaben said. “They had some big numbers early but they stayed mentally in their game.”
It’s Central’s first appearance in the tournament and the team was hampered by its unfamiliarity with the course, she said.
“I expect the scores to be better tomorrow,” Schaben said.
The tourney concludes Sunday.
