Sept. 20, 2008Central scores 1-0 win over 14th-ranked Wis.-Oshkosh
OSHKOSH, WIS.—In what ranks among the biggest wins in the brief history of Central College men’s soccer, the Dutch surprised previously unbeaten No. 14 Wis.-Oshkosh 1-0 Saturday. Senior midfielder Ben Heithoff (Council Bluffs, Abraham Lincoln HS) scored off a corner kick from midfielder Kenny Kranz (freshman, Champaign, Ill., Centennial HS) in the 29th minute. The Dutch defense and goalkeeper Greg Foote (senior, Maple Grove, Minn.) did the rest. Foote recorded four saves as Central improved to 5-3.
Wis.-Oshkosh, which outshot Central 10-6, slipped to 5-1.
“It’s a massive win for our program,” coach Garry Laidlaw said. “Oshkosh is a great team, with talented players all over the pitch.”
Laidlaw said the Dutch improved as the game progressed.
“Even though we scored, we weren’t playing our game in the first half,” he said. “We played smarter in the second half and created three very good chances. And we defended very well in the second half. I was very proud of the guys.”
Laidlaw said a challenging non-conference schedule is finally producing a payoff.
“We’re finding our rhythm better at both ends,” he said. “This gives us some momentum and we’re looking forward to starting conference play.”
Central’s Iowa Conference opener is Thursday, when Cornell College visits for a 4 p.m. match at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex field. The Rams are idle this weekend and will bring a 0-5 record to Pella.
