Sept. 18, 2008Central splits matches in Missouri
KIRKSVILLE, MO.—The Central College women’s tennis team wrapped up a three-match road swing by splitting a pair of matches, shutting out Stephens College (Mo.) 9-0 but suffering a 9-0 shutout by NCAA Division II Truman State.
The singles matches were all decided in straight sets. But coach Bryan Mours noted that the Dutch (5-5) still didn’t have their regular lineup. No. 2 singles player Faith Bliss (junior, Ottumwa) has been slowed by injury. She played in doubles in the Missouri matches but Mours said she should be ready for singles action this weekend.
“The only match we’ve been 100 percent healthy was against Wartburg (Sept. 6),” he said. “That’s when Faith got hurt. I’m really excited about being at full strength.
“Injuries are never a good thing obviously but this has allowed to players to move up a spot and play more difficult competition. I’m hoping that when they move back to their natural positions they’ll see a little more success.”
That should happen Saturday when the Dutch take on William Jewell College (Mo.) in a homecoming match at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex courts at 9 a.m. The Cardinals take a 0-1 record into a dual at Simpson College Friday.
