Iowa Wesleyan escapes, 1-0

PELLA—The Central College women’s soccer team lost a bruising 1-0 game to Iowa Wesleyan Wednesday night.

Jillian Sulcer of Iowa Wesleyan scored an unassisted goal 10 minutes into the second half to break the 0-0 tie.

The offensive charge for the Dutch was led by forward Jenna Hindman (junior, Swisher, Iowa, Cedar Rapids Prairie) who took six shots in the game, and midfielder Sarah Frese (senior, Marshalltown, Iowa) who took five. In all, Central had seven shots on goal, but was unable to put one past Iowa Wesleayn goalkeeper Cara Arnold.

“I think we out-played and out-worked them,” said Central coach Colin Kuchy. “I was very proud of the way we attacked their defenders.”

Kuchy said the team has been working more on playing through the middle of the field and that attacking from the middle helped them put more pressure on the Iowa Wesleyan defense.

Coming off of a 12-save performance on Saturday, goalkeeper Abby Norman (freshman, Geneseo, Ill.) recorded another 12 saves against Iowa Wesleyan.

“She’s really grown,” said Kuchy. “She’s been working very hard, doing extra training and getting some extra touches in practice. She’s playing very well right now.”

The Dutch will be in action again on Saturday when they open the Iowa Conference season against Cornell at 10:30 a.m. at the A.N. Kuyper Athletic Complex. In 2007, Cornell beat Central 2-1 in Mount Vernon. Cornell is currently 4-2.
