Central scores first league win

PELLA—Michelle Ripperger (junior, Urbandale) had 14 kills as the Central College volleyball team defeated Wartburg College 25-9, 25-21, 23-25, 25-20 for its first Iowa Conference win.

Ripperger hit .414 for the night while middle hitter Lindsay Jennings (junior, Atkins, Benton HS) hit a steamy .550 with 11 kills and five blocks. Setter Megan Callahan (senior, Dubuque, Wahlert HS) had 42 assists. Miranda Kouba (senior, Dubuque, Wahlert) had 21 digs.

Central (3-7 overall, 1-1 conference) surged to a 19-1 lead in set one but had to rally for victories in sets two and four. The Dutch hit .243 for the night. Wartburg (4-7 overall, 0-1 conference) hit .124.

“Wartburg is a good team but we saw things really well in set one,” coach Kent Clayberg said. “The only time that I thought we really lost our rhythm tonight was in set three. I think we actually played tougher in sets two and four than we did in set one. We really had to battle.

“I wanted it to be tight and I wanted us to have some battles tonight.”

The Dutch are in Milwaukee, Wis. Saturday, meeting Mount Mary (Wis.) at 10 a.m. and Northland Baptist at 2 p.m. Northland Baptist enters the weekend with a 4-3 record.
