Norman makes 12 saves in setback

PELLA—For the second straight outing, the Central College women’s soccer defense stiffened in the second half but the first-half hole was too much to overcome in a 4-0 setback against Monmouth College (Ill.) Saturday afternoon.

Goalkeeper Abby Norman (freshman, Geneseo, Ill.) posted 12 saves in facing 28 Monmouth shots, including a big stop of a second-half penalty kick. But Monmouth (1-2) struck twice in the game’s first 12 minutes and added a third goal with 11:54 remaining in the first half. The Scots completed the scoring with a tally in the 69th minute. Forward Amy Unzicker scored her third goal of the season for Monmouth and added an assist.

After being limited to two shots in the first half, the Dutch (1-4) made seven in the second period.

First-year coach Colin Kuchy appreciated his team’s persistence.

“I was very happy with how we played in the second half,” Kuchy said. “We made adjustments, we were positive and we worked together as a unit.”

“She’s growing every day as a keeper,” Kuchy said. “She’s learning a lot. The biggest thing I like is that she’s staying positive. She’s working hard on and off the field to get better.”

The Dutch continue their six-game homestand Wednesday when Iowa Wesleyan visits. Central outscored the Tigers 5-1 in Burlington last fall and holds a 5-1 lead in the series. Iowa Wesleyan is off to a 1-4 start.

“We’re getting there,” Kuchy said. “Overall, I was very pleased with the way the game went.”
