Grinnell shuts out Dutch, 2-0

GRINNELL—Central College again held the advantage in shots but not on the scoreboard as the Dutch men’s soccer team was silenced by Grinnell College Wednesday, 2-0.

Grinnell (3-1) broke a scoreless tie on an Andrew Stephenson goal in the 58th minute. Stephenson notched a second goal with just 49 seconds remaining to close out the win.

Central (2-3) held a 14-12 edge in shots, including a 9-4 advantage in the second half, but couldn’t find the net. Dutch goalkeeper Greg Foote (senior, Maple Grove, Minn.) made four saves while Grinnell’s Greg Fox recorded seven. Central was up in corner kicks 6-4 but the Dutch were held scoreless for a second straight game.

"Our problems continue to be in the final third of the field,” said coach Garry Laidlaw. “I thought we controlled the tempo for most of the game but we’re clearly struggling in front of the goal. In the game of soccer, when you don’t finish chances, it’s going to catch up with you sooner or later and that’s what happened tonight.”

Also slowing the Dutch is an ever-growing injury list. Laidlaw said two more players were sidelined Wednesday.

“This is as injury-riddled a team as I’ve seen,” he said.

Central makes its first home appearance in two weeks, playing host to Monmouth College (Ill.) in a women’s-men’s doubleheader, with the women’s contest starting at 1 p.m. and the men kicking off at 3 p.m. at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex field. The Dutch were 2-0 winners at Monmouth last year but trail in the all-time series, 5-4-1. Monmouth is coming off a 2-0 win at Benedictine (Ill.) and is 1-1.
