Paulson ties for second at Wartburg

WAVERLY—Central College freshman Sarah Paulson (Ottumwa) fired her second straight sub-80 round and tied for second out of 101 golfers at the Wartburg Fall Invitational Sunday.

The Dutch slipped a notch in the team standings, closing in 11th in the 17-team field with 347-347--694. But Central again showed dramatic improvement over last season. At last year’s Wartburg Invitational, the Dutch were last in a 14-team field, shooting 388-362-750.

Paulson finished with 77-79—156 and was part of a three-way logjam. Laura Heck of St. Thomas (Minn.) took medalist honors with 76-78—154.

“Sarah was pretty steady,” coach Jodee Schaben said. “She was hitting the ball well and she hit almost every green. She was struggling with her putting a little bit but it was a pretty solid round.”

Eva Downes (junior, Woodstock, Ill., Marion Catholic Central HS) tied for 21st at 85-82—167.

“Eva’s swing is good and her game is solid,” Schaben said. “It’s really fun watching her play this year.”

Abby Lukensmeyer (freshman, Hampton, Hampton-Dumont HS) followed at 88-90—178, Jacquelyn Mauk (freshman, Clive, Valley HS) at 99-96—195 and Allison Crooks (sophomore, Moline, Ill.) at 97-98—195. The Dutch were without varsity regular Nicole Wenstrand (sophomore, Essex, Shenandoah HS), who missed the tourney because of illness.

Central’s second unit, the White squad, finished 15th. Ali Miller (freshman, Davenport, North HS) came back strong with 105-91—196. Molli O’Brien (sophomore, Clarion, Clarion-Goldfield HS) shot 98-103—201 with Paige Blythe (freshman, Orange City, MOC-Floyd Valley HS) at 103-103—206, Lindsey Ellenson (sophomore, Amana, Clear Creek-Amana HS) at 106-108—214 and Janelle Stevens (sophomore, West Bend, West Bend-Mallard HS) at 105-110—215.

The Dutch make their lone home appearance of the fall next weekend, playing host to the 36-hole Central Invitational. The tourney will be staged at Pella’s Bos Landen Golf Club at 10 a.m. Friday and at Edmundson Golf Course in Oskaloosa Saturday at 8 a.m. Also in the field are Simpson, Buena Vista, Peru State (Neb.), Grand View and Graceland.
