Young Dutch overpowered at St. Louis
ST. LOUIS, MO.—Central College ran into more challenging opposition at the Washington-St. Louis (Mo.)/ASICS volleyball tourney Saturday.
Birmingham Southern (Ala.) swept the Dutch 25-19, 25-17, 25-22 and No. 11 Ohio Northern was a 27-25, 25-16, 25-16 winner. That left Central 0-4 in the two-day tourney and 2-6 overall.
“There were moments when things started to click but we’re so inexperienced,” coach Kent Clayberg said. “The light bulb flashes but we just can’t get the light bulb to stay on.
“We learned an awful lot of things and we got better, but we still have a long way to go. We’ll work at it and we’ll get better.”
The Dutch will need to make some rapid improvement as they play host to Iowa Conference favorite Simpson College in the league opener Tuesday. It’s also the home season opener for Central with the match starting at 7:30 p.m. at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium.
