Win No. 100 for Laidlaw as Dutch prevail in Washington

TACOMA, WASH.—Forward Brett McKenzie (sophomore, Lindenhurst, Ill., Antioch HS) knocked home his second goal of the season and a stout defensive effort let the Central College men’s soccer team slip past Puget Sound (Wash.) 1-0 Friday afternoon, giving coach Garry Laidlaw his 100th career victory.

Goalkeeper Greg Foote (senior, Maple Grove, Minn.) made six saves and posted his first shutout of the young campaign for the Dutch (2-1). It was his 19th career shutout.

“Greg had an excellent game,” Laidlaw said. “They threw a lot of stuff into the box but his footwork was right on. He had to punch a couple of shots out and he did a good job of holding the ball when he needed to.”

Central controlled play in the first period, outshooting the Loggers 6-1, but had to withstand a strong second-half effort in which Puget Sound held an 11-4 shot advantage.

“We played very well in the first half and I thought deserved to be up 1-0,” Laidlaw said. “In the second half, we knew they would throw everything at us. They play a very disciplined, long-ball style. We had a lot of aerial balls we had to deal with.”

Coach Garry LaidlawLaidlaw is in his 11th year at Central after taking over a struggling young program and steadily molding the Dutch into a conference contender. He’s compiled a 100-78-13 career mark, including an 83-28-9 record over the past seven seasons.

Puget Sound (1-2) is coming off a 15-3-1 campaign in 2007 but had to replace some key players.

“This is a great team we played,” Laidlaw said. “I’m really proud of the guys for coming in here and getting the win.”

After a day of sightseeing the Dutch take on Pacific Lutheran (Wash.) at Tacoma Sunday at 1 p.m. (Iowa time). It’s the teams’ first meeting. The Lutes have seven returning starters from last year’s 13-6-1 team, but are off to a 0-2 start.

“We’ll see another team that’s every bit as strong as the one we played today,” Laidlaw said.

Central continues to deal with some injury woes on the defensive end.

“That’s why this win speaks volumes about our team,” he said.
