Sept. 5, 2008Central toppled by ranked foes
ST. LOUIS, MO.—Central College couldn’t hide its inexperience in a pair of volleyball matches with ranked opponents at the Washington-St. Louis (Mo.)/Asics Invitational Friday evening.
No. 24 Cal Lutheran toppled the No. 22 Dutch 25-23, 15-25, 25-12 before No. 2-rated tourney host Washington-St. Louis breezed to a 25-13, 25-14, 25-17 sweep.
“There were some things we were very purposeful about developing in the past week,” coach Kent Clayberg said. “In some areas we made great strides and in some areas we’re just not there yet. Those things are critical to the way we want to run things and tonight we just couldn’t do it.
“But there were some positive steps. We’ll build on those and try to take a few more positive steps when we come back tomorrow.”
Central’s typically demanding early season schedule allows little time for recovery. The Dutch tackle highly regarded Birmingham Southern (Ala.) at 10 a.m. The Alabama school is transitioning into Division III. Central then meets No. 11 Ohio Northern at 12:30 p.m. Then it’s back to Pella to prepare for the home and Iowa Conference season opener against league title favorite Simpson College Tuesday.
