Jenna Hindman battles for possession

Central rolls to 8-0 win

MILWAUKEE, WIS.—Forward Jenna Hindman (junior, Swisher, Cedar Rapids Prairie HS) had two goals and an assist as the Central College women’s soccer team erupted for an 8-0 victory at Alverno College (Wis.) Monday.

It was the first collegiate victory for new head coach Colin Kuchy. Defender Brianne Knutson (sophomore, Marshalltown) and midfielder Lacy Merfeld (freshman, Peosta, Dubuque Hempstead HS) each scored two goals as well as the Dutch improved to 1-1.

It was Central’s most productive day since an 8-0 victory over Waldorf College Sept. 13, 2006.

Goalkeepers Melissa DeRuiter (sophomore, Robins, Linn-Mar HS) and Abigayle Norman (freshman, Geneseo, Ill.) each played a half to combine on the shutout. Norman made two saves as Central held a lopsided 26-5 shot advantage over Alverno (0-2).

Hindman recorded her first goal of the year in the game’s ninth minute on an assist from midfielder Kristi Klatt (sophomore, Cedar Falls), then scored again 9 minutes later with midfielder Kristen Davis (sophomore, St. Charles, Ill., East HS) getting the assist.

Knutson added an unassisted tally a minute later and the Dutch picked up an own goal for a 4-0 lead at intermission.

Merfeld scored 12 minutes into the second half with an assist from midfielder Rachael Everingham (freshman, Georgetown, Ill., Georgetown-Ridge Farm HS). With 25:34 remaining, defender Alyssa Brobst (sophomore, Pella) recorded her first collegiate goal on an unassisted 30-yard shot. With 17:59 left Merfeld scored off Hindman’s assist and Knutson finished the scoring with 11:12 remaining as Davis picked up her second assist.

Central is back on the road Saturday, traveling to Waverly for a neutral-site non-conference game with the College of St. Catherine (Minn.) at noon. The Wildcats are 1-0-1. Central doesn’t make a home appearance until meeting Grinnell College Sept. 10.
