Central opens with 3-1 win
PELLA—Central College used a three-goal second half to kick off its 2008 men’s soccer campaign with a 3-1 win over Concordia (Wis.).
Both teams got off to slow starts in their season openers, ending the first half in 0-0 stalemate.
Shortly over 6 minutes into the second half, Central recorded its first goal of the season, as Nick DeLucia (sophomore, Urbana, Ill.) scored on a Cody Jandik (sophomore, Cedar Rapids, Cedar Valley Christian HS) assist.
Concordia answered back 8 minutes later with a goal of its own that sailed right over the fingertips of Dutch goalkeeper Greg Foote (senior, Maple Grove, Minn.). The tie was short-lived, and Jandik soon scored a goal of his own with 35:51 left, assisted by Jonathan Schroeder (freshman, Saint Charles, Ill.).
A foul in the Falcons goal box gave the Dutch a penalty kick, where Brett McKenzie (sophomore, Lindenhurst, Ill.) converted with a shot well to the goalie’s left to finish off the scoring.
Even without a goal in the first half, Dutch coach Garry Laidlaw thinks Central got off to a good start in their opener.
“It was a typical first game,” Laidlaw said. “We spent some time feeling each other out, playing conservative, and we let the game come to us.”
Laidlaw was satisfied with taking 10 shots on goal to Concordia’s two in the first half.
“They were a solid team,” said Laidlaw. “It was a great early test. We battled and showed some resiliency and commitment to the end of the game.”
The Dutch will have a quick turnaround, with a game against Augsburg (Minn.) at 4 p.m. on Saturday. The Auggies opened their season at Simpson College Friday.
