Central, Kuchy make 2008 debut

PELLA—New coach Colin Kuchy and the Central College women’s soccer team make their 2008 debut with a weekend trip to Wisconsin.

Saturday night the Dutch kick off at Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) at 7 p.m. before coming right back at 11 a.m. Sunday against Alverno College (Wis.), also in Milwaukee.

Kuchy’s club returns six starters from a 10-5-3 squad that made a spirited Iowa Conference tourney run, ending a shootout away from a finals berth. The veterans include sophomore midfielder Kristi Klatt (Cedar Falls), who received second-team all-conference honors as a rookie. But Central is without the bulk of its offense. Just 12 of the team’s 37 goals were scored by returning players.

Kuchy will attempt to bolster the lineup at the top, moving midfielders Jenna Hindman (junior, Swisher, Cedar Rapids Prairie HS) and Sara Frese (senior, Marshalltown) to forward while freshman Lacy Merfeld (freshman, Peosta, Dubuque Hempstead HS) slides back to the midfield.

“Everyone’s adjusting really well,” said Kuchy, who called Merfeld a standout among the team’s newcomers.

MSOE is making rapid strides after putting together strong back-to-back recruiting years. The Raiders were 2-15 in 2006 but jumped to 9-7-1 last year. Alverno was 6-13 last season.
