Aug. 27, 2008Stiff opening test for Dutch
PELLA—Jumping directly into the teeth of its schedule, the Central College women’s tennis team takes on Iowa Conference contenders Coe College and Cornell College in season-opening matches Saturday.
Coach Bryan Mours’ squad meets Coe at 9 a.m. at the newly resurfaced A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex courts before facing Cornell at 2:30 p.m. League champion Coe was a 9-0 winner over Central last year while the Dutch topped Cornell twice, prevailing 6-3 in the regular season and 5-1 in Iowa Conference tourney play.
Central was third in the league and has three starters back from an 11-4 club. Hilary Baehr (senior, Des Moines, Roosevelt HS) returns at No. 1 singles but the remainder of the lineup spots are still up for grabs.
“Positions No. 2 through 10 are still competitive,” Mours said. “We’re really working to find the players who give us some consistency so that every time they step on the court we know what they can give us. It’s a good situation to have but at the same time it makes the coach’s job difficult.”
Cornell was sixth in the conference tournament last year but Mours said the Rams will be much improved.
“Cornell has bolstered its lineup,” he said. “And Coe obviously has one of the toughest teams in the region.”
