Central opens in 22nd in rankings

PELLA—Central College opens the 2008 campaign ranked 22nd in the CBS College Sports Network/AVCA Division III volleyball poll.

It’s the 126th time the Dutch have appeared in the national rankings. They’re coming off a 27-9 season in which they captured their 12th consecutive Iowa Conference title and their 17th crown overall. Central gained an NCAA Division III tourney berth for the 10th time, advancing to the second round.

But coach Kent Clayberg must find replacements for four graduated starters. Nine letterwinners return.

Juniata (Pa.) is ranked No. 1, edging out defending Division III championWashington-St. Louis (Mo.). No other Iowa Conference schools are rated but Simpson is among those receiving votes.

Central closed 2007 rated 17th. The Dutch open the season Aug. 29-30 with four matches at the Wis.-Whitewater Invitational. The ninth-ranked Warhawks finished second at last year’s national tourney.
