July 29, 2008Central ties academic honor record
PELLA—For a record-tying eighth straight year, the Central College volleyball team has received the Game Plan/AVCA Team Academic Award.
Central and Wis.-La Crosse share the longest active streak in the NCAA Division III, tying the all-time mark of eight straight years set by Wis.-Eau Claire (1995-2002).
It’s the ninth time overall that the Dutch have captured the academic honor which requires that the team’s combined grade point average for the preceding year be maintained at 3.30 or above (4.0 scale).
Kalamzoo (Mich.) is the all-time selection leader, earning the team academic award 11 times.
Central was among three Iowa Conference schools recognized, joined by Cornell College and Wartburg College. Out of some 400 Division III schools, 62 were honored.
Central landed six volleyball players on the Academic All-Iowa Conference team last fall, including Katie Johnson, who was an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honoree. Also an all-Iowa Conference pick, Johnson carried a 3.76 grade point average with an elementary education major.
The Dutch captured their 12th consecutive conference championship last year and their 17th volleyball crown overall. Coach Kent Clayberg’s squad advanced to the NCAA Division III tourney for the 11th time.
