PELLA—Six Central College athletes have been named to the U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association men's and women’s all-academic teams.
Named to the men’s squad was Guy Dierikx (senior, Port Byron, Ill., Riverdale HS). Dierikx graduated with a major in exercise science. He was a nine-time all-America honoree. At the NCAA outdoor meet May 22-24 at Oshkosh, Wis. he was fourth in the 400-meters and anchored Central’s second-place 4x400-meter relay squad.
Coach Kevin Sanger’s women’s squad is again also among 92 programs named as an all-academic team. Central posted a 3.14 combined team grade point average.
To qualify for the individual honor squad, an athlete must have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or better and an NCAA meet-qualifying mark. To receive all-academic team distinction, a squad must have a combined GPA of at least 3.0.
Honored were Rachel Boeke (junior, Cedar Rapids, Jefferson HS), a provisional NCAA meet qualifier in the discus, shot put (exercise science—athletic training major); Kari Hutchison (senior, Charles City), qualifier in the heptathlon, 400-meters and 4x400-meter relay (communication major); Emily Teas (freshman, Indianola), qualifier in the 4x400-meter relay (elementary education major); Rachelle Tipton (sophomore, Newton), qualifier in the 4x400-meter relay (elementary education major); and Jill Ziskovsky (freshman, Dallas Center, Dallas Center-Grimes HS), a qualifier in the 400-meter hurdles and the 4x400-meter relay (English/communication major).
