May 13, 2008Central’s Edwards. Mahan receive all-league honors
PELLA—For the second consecutive year, first baseman Michael Edwards (senior, Pella) and starting pitcher Brett Mahan (senior, West Des Moines, Valley HS) received all-Iowa Conference baseball recognition as they were named to the first team Tuesday.
Mahan, who was also a first-team selection in 2006 and on the second team in the 2007, closed out his career with a nine-inning 5-0 shutout win over Coe College Thursday in the conference tournament. He went 7-3 with a 2.81 earned run average in 73.2 innings over 12 appearances this season. Mahan fanned 57 and issued 23 walks while holding opponents to a .243 batting average. He finished his career with the most wins (24), strikeouts (219) and innings pitched (264) as well as the lowest ERA (2.80) in Central history. Mahan is the third Central baseball player to receive all-conference honors three times (Wade Van Vark, 1997-99 and Rick Hassman, 1986-88).
Edwards, who was a second-team selection in 2007, batted .329 (49-for-149) with a team-leading 40 RBIs and 14 doubles. He had a .425 on-base percentage, slugged .490 while walking 18 times and started all 43 games. Edwards is tied for first in school history in career doubles (41) while ranking third in hits (163) and fourth in RBIs (113).
Junior left fielder Derek Knutson (Richland, Wash., Yorkville, Ill. HS), freshman designated hitter Caleb Rangel (Rock Island, Ill., Alleman HS) and junior pitcher Adam Squires (Center Point, Center Point-Urbana HS) received honorable mention.
Knutson batted .298 (45-for-151) with 39 RBIs and three homeruns. He had a .380 on-base percentage while slugging .430 and started 43 games. Rangel batted a team-leading .355 (50-for-141) with 27 RBIs and a squad-high 20 walks. He set the all-time freshman hits mark (50) while slugging .454 and had an on-base percentage of .442 in 43 games started. Rangel also went 1-0 with a 3.18 ERA in three appearances out of the bullpen. Squires led the Dutch with five saves and 17 appearances . He had a 3.90 ERA while going 1-5 in 55.1 innings.
Central took third place in the Iowa Conference tournament Thursday-Saturday in Cedar Rapids and went 22-21 on the campaign.
