Ziskovsky, Dutch surge to early lead

WAVERLY—Jill Ziskovsky (freshman, Dallas Center, Dallas Center-Grimes HS) captured the long jump title as the Central College women’s track and field squad burst to the early lead after the first day of the Iowa Conference championships Friday.

Entering the day Central already had 16 points after Kari Hutchinson’s (senior, Charles City) victory in the heptathlon and Ziskovsky’s third-place finish last weekend. After Friday’s events, Central has 62, just ahead of heavily favored Wartburg College with 59.25. Luther is third with 46.25.

Central’s men stand third with 31.5 points. Host Wartburg leads with 60 while Loras has 45. Luther is fourth with 25.5.

Friday Ziskovsky was one of three Dutch placewinners in the long jump. She won at 17 feet, 6.75 inches, a career best. Jenny Owens (senior, Treynor) was fourth (17-1.25) with Hutchinson sixth (16-10.5).

Meanwhile rapidly improving sophomore Sara Mouw (Greene, North Butler HS) was third in the javelin with a career-best toss of 118-6. Ashley Wiederin (sophomore, Bedford) was fourth, also listed at 118-6 but a centimeter behind.

Rachel Boeke (junior, Cedar Rapids, Jefferson HS) was fifth in the discus, again surpassing the NCAA Division III meet provisional qualifying standard at 138-7. Ashley Feldman (sophomore, West Liberty) was eighth (132-3).

In the men’s competition, Kurtis Brondyke (freshman, Clinton) surpassed his career best in the long jump, placing second and topping the NCAA provisional mark with 23-2.75. Shane Hallengren (freshman, Estherville) was seventh (21-7.25).

Jason Fisher (senior, Montezuma) narrowly missed repeating as champion in the hammer throw. He placed second at 155-4, 15 inches shy of first.

Decathlete Greg Foote (junior, Maple Grove, Minn.) tied for sixth in the pole vault (11-11.75) with Eddie Elkin (senior, Altoona, Southeast Polk HS) eighth at 10-11.75.

Austen Schueler (senior, Granger, Woodward-Granger HS) became a league placewinner for the first time, finishing fifth in the javelin with a career-best 167-8.

Most of the running event finals will be staged Saturday, along with the remainder of the field events. Central’s men were third in the league last year while the Dutch women were fourth.
