May 8, 2008Mahan shutout lets Central advance
CEDAR RAPIDS—Brett Mahan (senior, West Des Moines, Valley HS) tossed a five-hit shutout to push Central College past Coe College 5-0 Thursday in the opening round of the Iowa Conference baseball tournament.
Seeded sixth in the six-team, double-elimination tourney, Central (21-19) takes on second-seeded Simpson College in a 4 p.m. contest. Simpson received an opening-round bye.
Third baseman Ben Tressel (sophomore, Dubuque, Hempstead HS) delivered a run-scoring double and left fielder Derek Knutson (junior, Richland, Wash., Yorkville, Ill. HS) followed with a two-run double in a three-run eighth inning for the Dutch.
Mahan (7-3) walked three and struck out six in going the distance for Central. Coe (21-19) had swept three games from Central at Pella April 26-27.
Thursday’s Simpson-Central winner moves on to a 4 p.m. game Friday. They’ll take on the winner of a 7 p.m. contest between No. 5 seed Loras College and top-seeded Wartburg College. Loras was a 6-3 victor over Luther in the other opening-round game. The Simpson-Central loser comes back at 1 p.m. Friday against the Loras-Wartburg loser in an elimination game.
The tourney winner receives an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III championship field.
