May 7, 2008Harris wins Sterling strength award
Seniors Kelly Harris (LeClaire, Pleasant Valley HS) and Michael Edwards (Pella) have received Central College’s Sterling Strength and Conditioning Awards.
Harris, a catcher on the Dutch softball team, received the women’s award while Edwards, a first baseman for the baseball squad, is the men’s recipient.
Endowed by 1993 Central graduate Travis Sterling, the awards were first presented in 2004 and are given to an athlete who demonstrates a passion to excel through the use of strength and conditioning, demonstrates leadership in the training program and displays improvement in performance in his/her sport due to gains made during strength and conditioning training.
Sterling, an all-Iowa Conference lineman for the Dutch football squad, operates Sterling Physical Therapy Clinic, PC in Pella and is one of Iowa’s few physical therapists who is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist. He specializes in rehabilitation of orthpaedic, sports and workers compensation injuries. Sterling is an enthusiastic supporter of Central’s strength and conditioning program.
Harris is a four-time letterwinner and co-captain of the Dutch softball team. She is the Iowa Conference MVP
and was named to the NFCA all-region first team. Harris batted .462 with a school-record nine home runs and drove in 30 runs while stealing a team-high 19 bases.
“Kelly had only one operating mode and that was one of fearless aggression,” said strength and conditioning coordinator Jake Anderson. “This personified her approach to training in the weight room and on the softball diamond. Always competing with reckless abandon helped Kelly shatter multiple records on the field and off. She always put her team above herself and she is an inspiration to everyone with whom she comes into contact.”
Edwards is also a four-year letterwinner and co-captain of the Central baseball team. He leads the team with a .353 average, with 14 doubles and 39 runs batted in. Edwards has tied the school career doubles record with 41.
“From day one Michael was a leader who embraced the power of strength and conditioning,” Anderson said. “It helped him become a solid leader and a phenomenal baseball player. Michael grew in a lot of ways during his time at Central College and thanks to his leadership, the baseball program’s approach to training has been transformed."
