Petersen repeats as league champ

DECORAH—Central College junior Andy Petersen (Davenport, West HS) came from 3 strokes back to win medalist honors at the Iowa Conference men’s golf tourney for the second straight year Saturday.

Petersen shot 37-79-75-75—266 in the tournament that was shortened to 63 holes because of weather. The first 27 holes were played at the Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City April 25-26 with the final 36 holes at the Oneota Country Club in Decorah Friday and Saturday. Petersen edged Buena Vista’s Josh Reed who shot 39-78-73-77—267. It’s the third straight year that Petersen has earned all-conference honors.

“Andy played real well, I’m proud of him,” said coach Charlie Estabrook. “He had a couple bad holes but also had some really good holes and battled tough.”

But tourney host Luther College surged to the title on its home course with 163-307-301-303—1074 while 25th-rated Central shot 151-315-306-306—1078 in failing to repeat as champion. Coe was third at 1111 with Wartburg at 1112 and Simpson shot 1115.

Luther receives the league’s automatic berth in the NCAA Division III championship meet May 13-16 in Braselton, Ga. Central is left hoping for an unlikely at-large bid, but Estabrook said that Petersen will merit serious consideration as an individual qualifier.

Reid Turner (senior, Des Moines, Grandview Park Baptist HS) was eighth at 39-81-77-74--271 and joined Petersen in receiving all-Iowa Conference honors. Andrew Townsend (sophomore, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) tied for 11th at 36-79-79-79—273 while Justin Smool (sophomore, Bagley, Panorama HS) was 14th at 39-76-80-81—276 and Joel Winters (sophomore, Hampton) was 15th at 40-84-75-78—277.

“Luther’s No. 3, 4 and 5 guys were the difference,” Estabrook said. “They played really well. We just couldn’t get over the hump. It was very frustrating.”

It was a disappointing finish for a squad that took team championships at the 16-team Central Dutch Classic, the 22-team Loras Invitational and the 17-team Buena Vista Invitational. But Estabrook said his club is already gearing up for next year.

“We’ve got an incredible group coming back and a great recruiting class,” he said.
