May 3, 2008Hutchinson wins heptathlon crown
WAVERLY—Central College senior Kari Hutchinson (Charles City) won the Iowa Conference heptathlon title Saturday with an NCAA Division III meet provisional-qualifying mark of 4,310 points.
Hutchinson, who placed second last year, survived blustery conditions to best Simpson’s Suzi Anderson who scored 4,122. Freshman Jill Ziskovsky (Dallas Center, Dallas Center-Grimes HS) placed third with a career-best 4,087 points, just under the 4,100-point provisional standard.
It’s the fourth time a Central athlete has captured the heptathlon crown in the six years it has been contested at the league meet.
In the men’s division, junior Greg Foote (Maple Grove, Minn.) placed third with 5,711 points after finishing sixth in 2007. Cornell’s James Klobucar was the champion with 6,227 points.
The heptathlon and decathlon are part of the Iowa Conference men’s and women’s track and field meet which continues next Friday and Saturday in Waverly. With Hutchinson’s win and Ziskovsky’s third-place effort, Central carries the early women’s team lead with 16 points. Dubuque is in second with nine. The Dutch men are in third place with six points while Cornell leads with 14.
Saturday results—Saturday Hutchinson was fourth in the long jump (16 feet, 4.5 inches), fourth in the javelin (88-0) and second in the 800 meters (2:27.23).
Ziskovsky had a big day. She was second in the long jump (16-10.5), second in the javelin (94-3) and first in the 800 (2:25.22).
Foote was fifth in the 110 meter hurdles (17.25 seconds), third in the discus (98-2), first in the pole vault (12-5.5), eighth in the javelin (128-2) and third in the 1,500 meters (4:58.36).
