Dutch win nine events at Central Open

PELLA—Seniors Jason Fisher (Montezuma) and Jenny Owens (Treynor) each won two events to lead the Central College track and field teams to a combined nine-event titles at the Central Open Friday at the Ron and Joyce Schipper Stadium.    

The women’s 4x100-meter relay team of Trish Hogrefe (freshman, Albert City, Sioux Central HS), Owens, Emily Teas (freshman, Indianola), and Alicia Dusenberry (Oswego, Ill.) took the title in 50.52 seconds. Sophomore Sara Mouw (Greene, North Butler HS) won the javelin throw (113-10) and Teaswas the champion of the 200 meters with a career-best time of 25.46 seconds.

“It’s hard to assess where we are as team with the less than ideal conditions we have been competing in,” said coach Kevin Sanger. “Still, we some good performances. Once we get some nice weather against some good competition we will really do some good things.”

Fisher wins two events--Fisher won the hammer in an NCAA Div. III provisional-qualifying mark of 175 feet, 10 inches and provisionally qualified in the discus throw with a 157-08 performance while placing third in the shot put (46-1.25). Sophomore Alex Miller (Adel, Van Meter HS) won the 800 meters in 1 minute, 55.62 seconds, freshman Kurtis Brondyke (Clinton) won the high jump (6-03.25), sophomore Pierre Taylor (Montgomery, Ill., Oswego HS) won the 3,000 meters (9:18.3) and freshman Matt Graber (Newton) was the shot put champion (48-11.50).

The Dutch are back in action May 9-10 when they travel to Waverly for the Iowa Conference championships. Last season both squads finished in third place.
