April 27, 2008Dutch fall in the 10th to Coe 6-5
PELLA—The Central College baseball team could not escape a tenth-inning jam and fell 6-5 to Coe College in an Iowa Conference contest Sunday.
Coe’s Eric Hanna led off the tenth with a double down the left-field line. Junior pitcher Adam Squires retired the next two batters but a wild pitch allowed Hanna to score the decisive run. The Dutch (17-17 overall, 7-11 conference) rallied by putting runners on first and third base with one out in the bottom of the frame but could not plate the equalizer.
“We just couldn’t get a big hit,” said coach Adam Stevens. “We had opportunities, but baseball is a game of inches. Coe made one more play than us and that was the difference.”
Sophomore third baseman Ben Tressel (Dubuque, Hempstead HS) went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and notched Central’s run in opening inning. In the third, senior first baseman Michael Edwards (Pella) cracked a two-run double to left field. Junior left fielder Derek Knutson (Richland, Wash., Yorkville, Ill. HS) added another run with an RBI-groundout. The Kohakws (21-14 overall, 13-7 conference) added one run in the third, fourth and fifth innings to take a 5-4 advantage. The Dutch leveled the affair in the sixth when sophomore catcher Blake Smith (Polk City, North Polk HS) doubled off the left-field wall to score Knutson from second.
Freshman pitcher Dayton Glasgow (Burlington) started for the Dutch and allowed four earned runs on seven hits, while striking out three and walking three over 4.1 innings. Senior Ben Gander (Maxwell, Collins-Maxwell HS) came on in relief and did not allow a hit while striking out one in 0.2 innings. Freshman Kristofer Ozga (Hawthorn Woods, Ill. Stevenson HS) threw 3.1 innings and surrendered an earned run on four hits, struck out four and walked one. Squires pitched the final 1.2 innings and gave up one earned run on one hit, with a strike out and a walk.
The Dutch travel to Mount Vernon Wednesday for a doubleheader against Cornell College (10-14 overall, 4-11 conference). On April 23, Central downed the Rams 6-3 in Pella.
