April 26, 2008Central holds lead at midway point of conference championships
IOWA CITY—The No. 25-ranked Central College men’s golf team battled windy conditions and stubborn short games Saturday but still holds a four-stroke lead after two rounds of the Iowa Conference championships at the par-72 Finkbine Golf Course.
Central carded a 315 to put its team total to 466 after inclement weather limited round one to only nine holes. Luther College gained eight strokes on the Dutch and has a 470 total.
“We didn’t play well today,” said coach Charlie Estabrook. “As a whole, our short games let us down in a big way. When the weather is cold and the wind is blowing like it was today you have to have a great short game to keep it respectable.”
Sophomore Justin Smool (Bagley, Panorama HS) is tied for second (39-76—115) with teammate Andrew Townsend (sophomore, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS who shot 36-79—115 leaving them four shots behind Luther’s Tom Lantzy (37-74—111). Junior Andy Petersen (Davenport, West HS) stands tied for fourth (37-79—116), senior Reid Turner (Des Moines, Grandview Park Baptist HS) is tied for 11th (39-81—120) and sophomore Joel Winters (Hampton, Hampton-Dumont HS) is tied for 24th (40-84—124).
The league tourney concludes with 36 holes at the Oneota Country Club in Decorah Friday and Saturday.
