Dutch compete at Kip Janvrin Open

INDIANOLA—The Central College track and field teams battled cold, windy weather and stiff competition late into the night Friday at the Kip Janvrin Open hosted by Simpson College.

“The weather was miserable,” said coach Kevin Sanger. “It basically turned into a practice session. It was a tough night to compete because the weather conditions were so poor.”

Sophomore Sara Mouw (Greene, North Butler HS) used her final attempt in the javelin throw to place eighth with a 109-04 effort.

“Sara threw well in the finals,” said Sanger. “She finished strong and it was nice to see that.”

In the men’s division, freshman Kurtis Brondyke (Clinton) tied for second in the high jump (6 feet 4 inches), senior Jason Fisher (Montezuma) took third in the discus throw with a 154-01 effort, junior Teddy Clark (Montgomery, Ill., Oswego HS) placed seventh in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a season-best time of 9 minutes, 51.09 seconds, and senior Austen Schueler was eighth in the javelin throw (143-02). The 4x100-meter relay team of Shane Hallengren (freshman, Estherville), Connor Daily (freshman, Ottumwa), David Vonnahme (sophomore, Arcadia, Ar-We-Va HS) and Breighen Powell (freshman, Wellman, Mid-Prairie HS) took sixth in 44.77 seconds.

There were no team scores, and many of Central’s top athletes competed in the Drake Relays and were not available for the Kip Janvrin Open.
