April 25, 2008Central grabs early league lead
IOWA CITY—Surviving a day of wild weather extremes that resulted in play being reduced to nine holes, the 25th-ranked Central College men’s golf team grabbed the early lead at the Iowa Conference tournament Friday.
Play was delayed in the morning by heavy rains at the par-72 Finkbine Golf Course, then stopped again by a mid-afternoon storm as temperatures dropped from the 70s to the 40s and stiff west winds developed.
Central shot 151 and stands 10 shots ahead of Buena Vista’s 161. Loras is at 162, with Coe and Luther tied at 163.
Andrew Townsend (sophomore, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) has the individual lead with an even-par 36. Andy Peterson (junior, Davenport, West HS) and Luther’s Tom Lantzy are tied for second at 37. Justin Smool (sophomore, Bagley, Panorama HS) and Reid Turner (senior, Des Moines, Grandview Park Baptist HS) each shot 39 while Joel Winters (sophomore, Hampton, Hampton-Dumont HS) had 40.
The tournament will be shortened from 72 to 63 holes, with an 18-hole round slated for Saturday in Iowa City. The final 36 holes will be played next Friday and Saturday at the Oneota Country Club in Decorah.
“The conditions were pretty tough,” coach Charlie Estabrook said. “We were talking as coaches this morning and said that breaking 40 would be a good score, so I’m fairly happy with the way we played.”
Estabrook said his players will need to brace for unseasonably cold, windy conditions Saturday.
“I think we’re ready,” he said.
