Central sends 12 to Drake Relays

PELLA—Central College will send 12 athletes to compete in five events at the Drake Relays in Des Moines this weekend.

The Dutch women are in the 4x200-meter relay Friday at 1:45 p.m. with Jenny Owens (senior, Treynor), Kari Hutchinson (senior, Charles City), Jill Ziskovsky (freshman, Dallas Center, Dallas Center-Grimes HS) and Emily Teas (freshman, Indianola).

At 2:25 p.m., Teas, Hutchinson, Ziskovsky and Rachelle Tipton (sophomore, Newton) will compete in the 4x400-meter relay preliminaries. Finals are Saturday at 5:17 p.m. The foursome earlier earned all-America recognition at the NCAA Division III indoor championships.

The men open at 2:55 p.m. Friday with the 4x400-meter relay featuring Matt Patrick (sophomore, Dallas Center, Dallas Center-Grimes HS), all-American Alex Miller (sophomore, Adel, Van Meter HS), Jake Contri (sophomore, Elk Grove Village, Ill.) and all-American Guy Dierikx (senior, Port Byron, Ill., Riverdale HS). Finals are at 5:26 p.m. Saturday.

Saturday at 9:44 a.m., Mitch Morris (sophomore, Naples, Fla., Barron Collier HS), Zac Bailey (senior, Okoboji), Dierikx and Miller will run the sprint medley relay. All-American Jason Fisher (senior, Montezuma) competes in the combined university/college hammer throw at 2:15 p.m. Saturday.

Coach Kevin Sanger said his squad won’t run the men’s 4x100-meter relay as originally intended because of some injury concerns.

“We’ve got a lot of people banged up a little bit,” he said.

But it still could be a good weekend for the Dutch.

“We think we’ve got a good shot at the women’s 4x200 and 4x400 breaking school records,” Sanger said. “The men’s sprint medley could do well and we hope we can get (an NCAA Division III meet) provisional time in the men’s 4x400.

“So we could do some good things. The kids are excited as are we. It’s a great track, a great facility and obviously great competition. I just hope we perform like we’re capable of doing.”

The remainder of the Dutch men’s and women’s squads travels to Indianola for the Kip Janvrin Open at Simpson College Friday evening.
